When I find something I like, I stick with it. I always have my nose in a book, but odds are I’ve already read it 10 or 20 times (#AnythingByElizabethPeters). I watch new shows if there’s a good one out, but on the odd occasion I have the TV on, I’m probably watching re-watching a series I love, even if everyone else thinks it’s weird.
This aversion to change typically only applies in the entertainment realm, but it definitely carries over into exercise!
That’s why I’ve been doing, more or less, the same Tracy Anderson workout DVD and intermittently running for the past SEVEN YEARS.
What can I say? I’m a big Tracy fan. I like the emphasis on a feminine figure and teeny, tiny arms. You may not know her, but you definitely know of her work if you’re ever admired the figures of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Christy Turlington, Molly Sims and a number of other bombshells.
So when I saw a new Tracy Anderson “Real Time” program floating about her Instagram, I was intrigued. (She also frequently posts fun, behind-the-scenes videos from her classes, like the one of Gwyneth doing a dance cardio workout below)
For the “Real Time” program, Tracy films her Master Class every Wednesday no matter where she is in the world. As a member, you have access to the video for one week, at which point it is replaced by the next week’s workout. Every week is different so your body is constantly working to adapt!
The price tag — about $79/month if you opt for the 6 month version — is definitely more steep than the DVD, which is about $9 flat. But considering I’ve paid for exercise only one or two months in my entire life (once joined Equinox because work was subsidizing it, but still couldn’t justify it) — I thought it was worth a try!
When you enroll in the program, you get access to a number of videos organized under various sub-headings. For obvious reasons, I recommend clicking on “Introduction” first.
There, you get a cute little video from Tracy where she introduces the program. It all seems very authentic — she talks to you as she’s getting ready in her New York City apartment, even impromptu demonstrating some moves on her living room floor.
Then there’s a second quick video where one of Tracy’s trainers breaks down the leg workouts that will appear that week, ensuring you do them all correctly (there’s a new video like this every week, explaining that week’s moves).
And then, for the actual workout, you are essentially positioned right behind Tracy in her Master class!
The biggest difference between “Real Time” and the DVDs is the MUSIC and general speed of the class. She plays current songs, often with a little bit of dance/techno vibe at some point, and it’s just so much more upbeat than the DVDs. You jump around a little bit, but it’s not all jumping like the Dance Cardio video above. It’s more of a fusion, which I really love!
Basically, I hate working out. I honestly think if we made terrorists do spinning classes someone would call it torture… and it would be a little bit justified.
But if you’re a Tracy devotee, I definitely recommend trying the Real Time program. I’m obsessed! It is just so much fun. If you’ve never done one of her videos before, maybe start there so you can get an idea of her program for a lot less $$. If you like it, I definitely recommend continuing on!
