Ever since reading Skinny Bitch a few summers back, I’ve been on a somewhat consistent health kick (except for the year I studied abroad in Egypt and Israel, where I imbibed far too many adult beverages). But I’ve never taken things to the next level and done a three-day cleanse, and I’d love to have some people to do it with!
I know, the title says “juice cleanse,” but here’s what I’m thinking. What if it’s primarily juice, but smoothies are also okay? Or you could start at whatever level you’re comfortable with — your three-day cleanse could be cutting out sugar, processed food, or some other edible vice. I’ve done that a few times for three-day stints and always feel like a rock star afterwards. It’s like you have limitless energy and your skin and hair start glowing.
It’s important to remember that I’m not a doctor and you shouldn’t do anything your body isn’t comfortable with. Cutting out sugar or processed food for three days is a huge accomplishment, and if that’s where you are right now, that’s great!
They say you should try to eat a little cleaner for a few days before a cleanse, minimizing your intake of foods like sugar, meat and dairy. So I propose a Saturday start date, giving us all a few days to cut back on sweets and prepare our bodies a bit.
The cleanse will go from Saturday to Monday, and on Tuesday, we’ll all feel like rock stars and supermodels. Those of you who eliminate sugar or processed food will almost definitely feel amazing, while those who go for only juices and smoothies may have a bumpier ride, but I’m curious to see what all the hype is about!
The only thing I will not compromise on is this: pasteurized juices like Odwalla and Naked do not count and should not be consumed during the cleanse. A friend once said he was trying a juice cleanse with his wife and brandished an armful of Odwalla, and I nearly fainted. After pasteurization, you’re left with a sugary, lifeless mess. You can either go somewhere like Whole Foods for fresh juice or you can make your own, but pasteurized juices are verboten.
Juices like Evolution or Suja, which are high pressure processed (HPP), are OK, but try to go for the fresh stuff whenever possible.
