Normally I don’t go in for magazine articles, being uninterested in “50 ways to seduce a man” (already found my guy) and far too boring to try “16 new summer hairstyles.” But I stumbled across a surprisingly interesting article last night that I thought was worth sharing.
Titled “Is Doing It All the New ‘Having It All?’ A Look at the Changing Face of Women’s Careers,” the Marie Claire article discusses how more and more women these days either have a full-time job and a few other gigs on the side, or are juggling six jobs like circus performers spinning plates.
Maybe they’re bloggers with an Etsy shop and aspiring fashionistas, or they’re in advertising, teach yoga and have a health coaching business on weekends. Of course not everyone matches this description, but more women these days are cobbling together careers that didn’t exist before, taking a pinch of this and sprinkle of that to create their personalized “dream” job.
“If I’m working on someone else’s show six days a week, I’m working on my show on the seventh,” Rachel Rudwall, who freelances in media with companies like A&E and National Geographic and dreams of being on camera, explains. “When it feels like too much to handle, I think about how I’m more free to create my path and pursue what really matters to me. Then I realize it’s exactly where I want to be.”
With a full time job, the blog and the book, I think I’m kinda in this category. And when I was in college, even if I was taking so many extra classes I had to get permission to do it, I also had an internship and a job or two. I bet a lot of you are in the same boat, and juggling way more than I am! Half of these women are mothers on top of everything else!
There are a few reasons, I think, why this new trend is emerging. Part of it is financial necessity — the recession hit everyone, and a lot of us have never experienced a booming economy as adults. Part of it is the ability to connect to anyone, anywhere (bloggers, Etsy, anyone with customers) with the Internet. And part of it is just the old-fashioned hustle gene so many of us have. If there’s something you want to do — to make more money, or because you’re just passionate about it — you best get started!
